Back-to-school season is here!
The start of a new school year can feel exciting, emotional, and – let’s be honest – a little overwhelming. Between shopping for school supplies, checking backpacks, updating paperwork, planning lunches, and trying to get everyone back on a normal sleep schedule, there is a lot for parents to remember.
Whether your child is heading to kindergarten for the very first time, starting middle school, or returning for another year with friends and familiar teachers, a little preparation can make those first school mornings much easier.
To help San Antonio families get ready, we’ve put together the ultimate back-to-school checklist so you can spend less time wondering, “What am I forgetting?” and more time enjoying those final days of summer.
1. Check Your Child’s School Supply List
Before heading to the store, check your child’s school or school district website for the official supply list for their grade.
Common school supplies may include:
- Backpack
- Lunchbox
- Reusable water bottle
- Pencils and pens
- Colored pencils, crayons, or markers
- Glue sticks
- Scissors
- Notebooks
- Composition books
- Folders
- Binders
- Pencil pouch or box
- Headphones or earbuds
- Tissues or classroom supplies requested by the teacher
Before buying everything new, check what you already have at home. Last year’s unused notebooks, folders, pencils, and art supplies may still be perfectly good for another school year.
Mom Tip: Label everything! Water bottles, lunchboxes, jackets, backpacks, and other personal items have an amazing ability to disappear during the school year.
2. Do a Back-to-School Closet Check
Kids grow quickly, and sometimes we don’t realize just how much until they try on their school clothes from a few months ago.
Before shopping, check:
- School uniforms, if required
- Everyday shirts and bottoms
- Comfortable shoes
- Socks and underwear
- Light jacket or sweater
- PE clothes and athletic shoes
- Dress-code requirements
San Antonio may still be very hot when school begins, but classrooms can feel surprisingly cold with the air conditioning running. Keeping a lightweight sweater or jacket in your child’s backpack can be helpful.
3. Complete School Forms and Important Paperwork
Nobody wants to discover an unsigned form hiding at the bottom of a backpack on the first morning of school.
Before the school year begins, make sure you’ve completed any required:
- Registration documents
- Emergency contact information
- Medical or allergy information
- Medication authorization forms
- Transportation information
- After-school care forms
- Meal program applications
- Technology agreements
It’s also a good time to double-check that your child’s school has your current phone number, email address, and emergency contacts.
4. Prepare for School Lunches and Snacks
School mornings become much easier when you already have a plan for breakfast and lunch.
Decide whether your child will eat school lunch, bring lunch from home, or do a combination of both.
If you’re packing lunches, stock up on easy favorites such as:
- Sandwiches or wraps
- Fresh fruit
- Cut vegetables
- Yogurt
- Cheese
- Crackers
- Simple protein options
- Reusable snack containers
Creating a small “lunch station” in your refrigerator or pantry can also help older children choose items and pack their own lunches.
And don’t forget the water bottle!
5. Start Resetting the Family Sleep Schedule
Summer schedules have a way of getting later and later. A week or two before school starts, begin gradually moving bedtime and wake-up time closer to the school-year schedule.
Try adjusting bedtime by 15 to 30 minutes every few nights instead of making one big change the night before school begins.
A simple evening routine – dinner, shower or bath, preparing clothes and backpacks, then quiet time before bed can help children transition back into school mode.
6. Confirm Your Transportation Plan
Make sure everyone knows exactly how your child will get to and from school.
Confirm:
- Bus route and pickup time
- Bus stop location
- Parent drop-off procedures
- Car pickup procedures
- Walking or biking routes
- After-school transportation
- Who is authorized to pick up your child
If your child is starting at a new school, consider practicing the morning route before the first day.
For younger children, make sure they know their full name, your name, and what to do if they become confused about where they’re supposed to go after school.
7. Take Care of Health and Medication Needs
Check whether your child’s school requires updated health information or immunization records.
If your child takes medication during school hours or has allergies or other medical needs, contact the school nurse before the first day whenever possible.
Make sure teachers and appropriate school staff understand any important information they need to know.
8. Get Technology Ready
Technology is now a regular part of school for many students.
Before school starts, check:
- School-issued laptop or tablet
- Chargers
- Headphones
- Student login information
- Parent portal access
- School communication apps
- Learning platforms used by the school
Save important school websites and login information somewhere secure so you’re not searching for passwords during a busy Monday morning.
9. Add Important School Dates to Your Calendar
As soon as your school calendar becomes available, add important dates to your family calendar.
Look for:
- First day of school
- School holidays
- Teacher workdays
- Early-release days
- Parent-teacher conferences
- Picture day
- Testing dates
- School events
- Holiday breaks
Planning ahead can make arranging childcare, appointments, and family trips much easier.
10. Talk About the Emotional Side of Going Back to School
Back-to-school preparation isn’t only about backpacks and pencils.
Some children are excited to return. Others may feel nervous about a new teacher, making friends, finding their classroom, riding the bus, or starting an entirely new school.
Give your child opportunities to talk about how they’re feeling.
Instead of only asking, “Are you excited?” try asking:
“What are you most looking forward to?”
“Is there anything you’re worried about?”
“What would make your first day feel easier?”
Sometimes simply knowing that their feelings are heard can help children feel more confident.
11. Plan the First-Day Photo
Because somehow, even during the busiest morning of the year, we moms still want that first-day-of-school picture!
Prepare the night before by deciding where you’ll take the photo and having any first-day sign ready.
Try to give yourself an extra five minutes in the morning so the photo doesn’t become another source of stress.
And remember – the photo doesn’t have to be perfect. One day, that slightly messy hair, oversized backpack, and nervous little smile may become one of your favorite memories.
The Night-Before-School Checklist
Before everyone heads to bed, do one final check:
✓ Backpack packed
✓ School supplies ready
✓ Clothes and shoes laid out
✓ Lunch prepared or planned
✓ Water bottle ready
✓ Transportation confirmed
✓ Alarm set
✓ Devices charged
✓ First-day sign ready
✓ Bedtime on time
And maybe one more important thing: give yourself a little grace.
The first morning may not go perfectly. Someone may forget something. Breakfast may take longer than expected. There may even be a few tears from the kids or from Mom.
That’s okay. A new school year is a new beginning, and everyone needs a little time to settle into a new routine.
